“The peak occurred on October 21 with approximately 15 meteors per hour,” the Bosscha Observatory explained in a statement on Instagram.

Shooting stars occur when meteors collide with air particles and create heat that burns the meteor to create a bright stream of light in the sky.

At the peak of this meteor shower, the Moon is approaching its first quarter phase. The sky will be darker after midnight after the moon has set.

According to NASA, this is considered ideal because the Orionids are best seen in the hours after midnight. An area with dark skies with little light pollution is best for a study area.

NASA describes the Orionids as “one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year”.

This meteor shower can appear anywhere in the sky. However, it seems that they came close to Betelgeuse, a famous red giant star in the constellation Orion.

The Orionids are one of two annual meteor showers caused by Halley’s comet, which was last seen in the inner solar system in 1986. The other meteor shower is the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which ‘ peak every year in early May.

At its peak, it is estimated that around 23 meteors can be seen per hour. It is estimated that they travel at a speed of 66 kilometers per second or about 238 thousand km / hour.
