The dissident imam blamed for Turkey’s 2016 coup attempt Fethullah Gulen has died at the age of 83, reports the news agency Reuters, among other things.
Gülen died in exile in the United States, where he had lived since 1999.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Gülen of being responsible for the 2016 coup attempt that led to massive purges in the country. More than 250 people died in the ensuing unrest. Gülen has denied the claims of connections to the events.
After the coup attempt, Turkey demanded that the United States extradite Gülen, but he remained in America.
Gülen and Erdoğan broke up in 2013. At that time, he was declared a terrorist in Turkey.
