Bevan Davies: New York Types features vintage black and white photos of Lower Manhattan taken in the mid-1970s. very contemporary as we recognize the use of a camera that goes back to the beginning of the medium.” This exhibition will present various aspects of the city’s architecture, displaying serial images dedicated to these buildings.
Bevan Davies’ large-scale prints perfectly depict the illuminated surfaces of doors, storefronts and Gotham facades. Davies describes his approach as “an attempt to let the camera see almost for itself. ” These facades in New York, taken early in the morning, show the contrasting architectural themes and defined by the chiaroscuro of the building.
Bevan Davies (American, 1941 – ) studied the humanities at the University of Chicago in the early 1960s After moving to New York, he continued to study with Bruce Davidson in his studio in New York, where he met he with Mary Ellen Mark, Diane Arbus, Ralph Gibson and Danny Lyon. Davies’ first New York exhibition was at the Witkin Gallery in 1969. The Sonnabend Gallery presented Davies’ work in solo and group shows at their SoHo gallery in the mid to late 1970s.
