Three dead and serious damage in Chiapas due to overflows and floods after the passage of Nadine

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chis; October 20.- Three people dead, streams and rivers overflowing, floods, damaged houses and roads and landslides in around twenty municipalities in the Selva and Norte regions, as a consequence of cold front number 4 and the effects of tropical storm Nadine, Civil Protection authorities and residents reported. Two of the fatalities died buried underground due to the collapse of a hill and another was dragged with their vehicle while crossing a stream.

For this Sunday, extraordinary rains, greater than 250 millimeters, are expected in Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz; torrential rains of 150 to 250 millimeters in Chiapa, San Luis Potosí and Tabasco; intense of 75 to 150 millimeters in Hidalgo, Querétaro and Tamaulipas, reported the National Water Commission (CNA).

The rains that have fallen since Saturday in Chiapas have caused damage in the municipalities of Tapilula, Rincón Chamula San Pedro, Yajalón, Amatán, Pichucalco, Solosuchiapa, Juárez, Tecpatán, Pantepec, Francisco León, Rayón, Mezcalapa, Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacán, Tumbalá, Ocosingo, Chilón, San Juan Chamula, Sabanilla, Tila, Salto de Agua and others.

In the municipality of San Juan Chamula, a city council official whose identity, age and place of origin are unknown, drowned when he tried to cross a swollen stream with a truck in the Tierra Colorada community.

The municipal official tried to get out of his vehicle as it was swept away by the current, but he was unable to stand up and died from drowning.

Tzotzil indigenous people arrived at the scene to try to rescue the body of the municipal official who had been trapped in some branches.

Between the municipalities of Yajalón and Tila, in the north of Chiapas, the overflowing of a river near Pulpitillo caused the closure of the highway between Petalcingo (Tila) and Yajalón.

In the municipality of Ocosingo, the La Virgen River has overflowed, so families who have their homes in low-lying areas have been transferred to a shelter set up by the city council.

The Civil Protection Secretariat of Chiapas reported that up to 634 families who own 1,288 homes have been affected in the more than 20 municipalities where torrential rains have fallen.

In addition, 15 road sections have been affected, mainly in the Jitotol-Simojovel section, at kilometer 23. Also 14 sections of rural roads have been damaged with settlements and landslides.

Since Saturday, surveillance has been maintained in rivers and streams in the municipalities of Rayón, Tumbalá, Tila and Chilón, reported the Secretariat of Civil Protection.

Several families have been evacuated from communities in the municipalities of Pantepec and Ocosingo. In Pantepec elements of Civil Protection, State Preventive Police, Municipal Police, National Guard, Army, have applied the DN-III-E Plan. “In said municipality, three temporary shelters have been activated to care for 115 people,” the Secretariat reported.

The CNA reported that winds with gusts of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour are expected in Tabasco, Veracruz and Istmo de Tehuantepec.

In the town of Carrizal, municipality of Tila, the collapse of a hillside buried a house and two people who were there lost their lives. The house was a cement construction with a tin roof, reported the Civil Protection Secretariat.
