Can we change? For the better? The author of the world’s most read romance novels, which have sold more than 200 million copies and been translated into 50 languages, Nicholas Sparks asked himself this basic question to write a new novel that deeply human, moving, full of hope: Where miracles are born. After all, three people who seem to have nothing in common will cross paths and their lives will be changed forever. A story of hope and deep healing.
Tanner Hughes, the novel’s hero, had a career in the military. He spent his life moving from one place to another, never putting down roots.
When his dying grandmother reveals to him the name and address of his father, whom he never knew, he decides to take the road to Asheboro, a small town in the mountains of North Carolina, with the goal meet him at last.
For his part, in Asheboro, Jasper is haunted by a terrible accident that happened decades ago. He grows old in solitude with his dog Arlo and wanders the Uwharrie National Forest in search of morels.
Arriving in Asheboro, Kaitlyn’s recently divorced daughter Casey ends Tanner’s classic car in the parking lot of a sports restaurant. Which inevitably leads to an unimaginable but real event… which may have unexpected consequences.
A novel born from a strong image
Nicholas Sparks, in an email interview, explains that his sources of inspiration vary from one novel to another, but this time it was an intense image that inspired him.
“One evening I thought I saw an old man in the forest. He was injured and a dog was standing next to him. At that time, I didn’t know who he was, why he was in the woods, or why he was hurt. I wasn’t sure the dog belonged to him. The image remained and little by little, the story fell into place. “
This novel is about tragedy that is hard to overcome, but also about hope. “I’ve lived long enough to know that challenges and life are almost synonymous. We all face challenges and difficulties, just as we all have joys and surprises.”
He does not consider himself safe. “Because challenges are inevitable, I’m not surprised when they come up in my life. By nature, I either try to fix what went wrong or find a way to accept failure and move forward in the most positive way I can find. I consider myself more optimistic than I am optimistic.”
A character he feels close to
Nicholas Sparks felt very close to the character of Kaitlyn, which he shows with real truth and humanity in the novel.
“Several women I’ve known in my life who are in similar situations to hers have inspired me: women in their 40s who are raising their children and shining in their careers.”
“Even if they’re not just unhappy, they sometimes wonder if there’s something else waiting for them. Obviously, they sometimes wonder where the good people are. “
A real picture
The famous writer says that he tried to create the character of Kaitlyn with all this in mind. “I enjoyed writing her story because it seemed like a true and honest picture of women in similar situations. I felt close to her in terms of her relationship with her children.”
“Like Kaitlyn, there have been times in my life when I wondered if life had more to offer me than I was getting. I think it’s an almost universal feeling.”

“Although she was grateful that the sad, sometimes overwhelming feelings of the divorce had subsided – and she had actually moved on – there were times when she missed the close and quiet moments of the couple. These days, her life revolved around work and children, with no time for anything else – tonight was a perfect example.”
