Dengue fever is under surveillance in Martinique

“All indicators have been progressing for several weeks” on the island according to Public Health France. Between 100 and 160 cases clinically suggestive of dengue fever were estimated per week between September 9 and October 13, compared to 95 three weeks previously. “The virus is circulating mainly in the center and south of the island” observes the national agency in its latest bulletin of October 17, 2024.

“All indicators have been progressing for several weeks”with values for data in community medicine which exceed the seasonal thresholds, according to the latest publication from Public Health France (SpF) dated Thursday October 17, 2024.

In community medicine (Network of sentinel doctors), between 100 and 160 cases clinically suggestive of dengue were estimated per week [entre le 9 septembre et le 13 octobre dernier]compared to 95 weekly cases on average over the period mid-August – early September.

At the same time, a reduction in home visits (SOS-doctors) for dengue fever was noted, going from 41 to 17, between September 23 and October 13. Public Health France specifies, however, that the indicators for week 41 (from October 7 to 13), are “to be interpreted with caution given the social context (blockages, roadblocks) limiting access to healthcare services”.

“23% of confirmed cases concern those under 15” further indicates the Agency, and adds that “the virus circulates mainly in the center and south of the island”.

Prevention is mainly based on the fight against mosquitoes spreading the virusalongside individual protection measures, namely:

  • Elimination of stagnant water points;
  • The use of repellents;
  • Wearing covering clothing;
  • Installing mosquito nets at home.
