Chairman of the Korean Medical Association apologizes for writing a post that said, “The President’s Office made X sound like a schizophrenic patient”

Lim Hyun-taek, president of the Korean Medical Association, criticized an official from the President’s Office who claimed that education is possible even if medical schools are expanded, calling him “bullshit like a schizophrenic patient,” and apologized when he was criticized for “disparaging the mentally disabled.”

On the 18th, Chairman Lim posted on his Facebook page that a high-ranking official from the President’s Office said the day before, “(Even if we push for an increase in the number of medical schools), considering the nature of first-year pre-med education that focuses on lectures rather than practical training, education is possible if we prepare by dividing classes, etc.” The article quoted him as saying, “The safest and most achievable number without creating a burden is 2,000.” This official also refuted the Medical Association’s claim that there is no shortage of doctors, saying, “You are making the (unrealistic) assumption that doctors provide medicine without dying.”

Chairman Lim identified the official in question as Jang Sang-yoon, senior social affairs officer in the President’s Office, and said, “I wonder if this author Jang Sang-yoon is in his right mind. I’m tired of hearing bullshit like a schizophrenic patient every day.” “If the story is wrong, I will have to deposit all my assets and say I will take responsibility by returning them to society.”

As these remarks became known, criticism arose that Chairman Lim had belittled the mentally disabled.

On this day, Kim Young-hee, policy committee chair of the Korean Association for Families of the Mentally Handicapped, said on her Facebook page, “I express deep regret over Chairman Lim’s disparaging and disdainful expressions toward patients with schizophrenia (formerly schizophrenia),” and added, “Open and polite to those with schizophrenia.” “We strongly urge an apology and a promise to prevent recurrence. It is once again deeply regrettable that the president of the Korean Medical Association made such an expression publicly.”

Chairman Lim, who seemed to be aware of such criticism, deleted the post criticizing Senior Secretary for Social Affairs Jang and wrote on Facebook, “I deeply apologize for hurting psychiatric patients, their families, and attending doctors with inappropriate expressions.” However, no apology was made to Senior Secretary for Social Affairs Jang.
