Another location is being discussed in the debate about relocating the Berlin Central and State Library (ZLB). Senator for Culture Joe Chialo (CDU) discussed with the owners of the Galeria Kaufhof department store on Alexanderplatz about moving the ZLB to the building complex there.
This emerges from an answer to a parliamentary question in the House of Representatives published on Friday by the Senate Culture Administration.
The reason for the discussions was an idea from the owner of the property to integrate the ZLB into the newly created building ensemble. Since the buildings in which the library is currently housed are dilapidated and in need of renovation, the Senate supports any solution “that secures the operation and future of the ZLB in an economical and sustainable manner,” it said.
Integration into the new building ensemble at Alexanderplatz is another option that Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH has to examine and evaluate.
Commerz Real AG, as the owner of the property, has developed options for accommodating the ZLB in the buildings. The Senate administration emphasized in the discussions that maintaining the Galeria department store and the jobs there was a priority for them.
