Millions of people are without power and devastated
Here is the paradise of socialism in action, for which the ignorant cry in our country as well.
Cuba‘s communist government said last night it would close all non-essential jobs in its bloated public sector as part of emergency measures to control power outages that currently exceed 12 hours a day for millions of people, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
Cuba experienced a dramatically long blackout this year, even for an island where it happens often. Entire provinces were left without electricity for hours, and in many places outside the capital, Havana, people were without electricity for six hours a day.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero blamed the outages on causes familiar to Cubans – deteriorating infrastructure, fuel shortages and rising demands.
“The lack of fuel is the most important factor,” Marrero said in a televised address that was delayed by several hours last night due to technical problems.
High winds and rough seas that battered the island nation as Hurricane Milton passed last week have hampered Havana’s ability to deliver the short supply of fuel from boats off the coast.
Cuba’s two major power plants are operating below capacity, the government said, announcing that they will soon be taken off the grid as part of a four-year plan to revive Cuba’s neglected infrastructure.
Cuba’s fast-growing private businesses, which authorities in Havana say have high electricity consumption, will also soon start paying more for the energy they use, Marrero said.
Representatives of power distribution companies said they expected power production to improve in the coming days as fuel is distributed across the Caribbean’s largest island.
The island’s electricity crisis has made life increasingly unbearable for residents who already suffer from dire shortages of food, fuel, water and medicine, leading to a record exodus from the island in recent years.
