The 5 biggest misconceptions about menopause: hormones, HRT, hot flashes, phases of menopause

Many women and some doctors are afraid to think about hormone replacement therapy (also HRT or HRT) for menopausal symptoms – the fear of it is too great.

After the “Women’s Health Initiative Study” (WHI study) in 2002 (supposedly) showed that hormone replacement therapy can lead to side effects such as breast cancer, thrombosis, heart attack and stroke, women and doctors were reluctant for a long time. Years later the data was reprocessed – and the Authors of the study themselves stated that there was a misinterpretation of the data and hormone replacement treatment during menopause has more benefits than risks.

Today, hormone replacement therapies are considered less risky. Women with severe symptoms, especially Hot flashes, it is now recommended to take hormones unless there are health reasons against it.

In addition, doctors today use completely different therapies for menopausal symptoms than at the time of the WHI study: Bioidentical hormones are also produced in the laboratory, but the structure of the hormones produced from them is similar to that of our own body.

Women should always discuss with their gynecologist individually whether hormone replacement therapy is an option.
