The conflicts between the National Army and FARC dissidents in the south of the country continue to leave big traces in the fight against illegal armed groups. The latest fighting was recorded in the study of Piñuña Negro, in the town of Puerto Leguízamo, Putumayo, where the soldiers of the Army were maintaining the operation of military control when, surprisingly, they began to be attacked by the a criminal structure led by the alias ‘Kevin’.
In response to the attack, the soldiers returned the attack, and managed to kill one of the criminals. According to Colonel José Ángel Albino Álvarez, chief of staff and second in command of the Twenty Seventh Jungle Brigade, the operation included a high precision rifle, a pistol, 23 field equipment, supplies, ammunition of various calibers, food and supplies explosive, as well as elements for launching explosive devices and communication equipment.
This criminal structure, known as Commission 48 of the border commandos, is led by the alias ‘Kevin’ and has around 50 armed men. It is known that these dissidents have been carrying out acts of terrorism in several towns in the Putumayo department, such as Puerto Guzmán, Puerto Asís and Puerto Caicedo, as well as in Piamonte, Cauca. The civilian population of these areas have suffered from acts of terrorism and constant threats by the illegal group.
Colonel Albino Álvarez pointed out that the military operation is part of a continuous operation carried out in the region to neutralize the criminal activities of illegal armed groups. “The National Army reaffirms its commitment to the security of Colombia and continues to carry out military operations against illegal armed groups throughout the region, frustrating their criminal intentions and thus “to ensure the integrity and tranquility of the residents of this area,” he said.
The military operation not only weakened the ‘Kevin’ alias structure, but prevented possible attacks with explosives that were being prepared for launch on against the public force or against the community. The seizure of war items represents a severe blow to dissidents, who use these tools to instill fear among the residents of the area.
Local authorities have repeated the call to the civilian population to cooperate with information that will allow them to continue to weaken these illegal groups. The Army, for its part, has strengthened its presence in the affected municipalities, to ensure the security of residents and stability in the southern part of the country.
With these actions, the armed forces reaffirm their goal of returning tranquility to the regions most affected by armed violence, fighting the FARC dissidents and other groups that are trying to to impose their control through terrorism. At the same time, operations continue in Puerto Leguízamo and other major cities, with the hope that joint efforts will allow peace to be restored in this disputed region of Putumayo.
