According to the monitoring of the National Hospital Survey in the month of August 2024, the number of health centers in the country that perform elective surgeries has been reduced.
Julio Castro, coordinator of the ENH, explained that hospitals that historically performed cancer surgeries, particularly breast cancer, no longer do them.
«Beyond the number, there are some types of surgery, especially complex surgery, that for reasons of supplies, personnel or whatever are not being done, and the patients who were previously going to these centers have to go to others that “They are not the usual ones,” Castro said.
The statement was made in an interview with journalist Vanessa Davies, on the Entre Líneas program, broadcast by Unión Radio.
In the particular case of breast surgery, the number of public health centers that performed it was reduced by 40% among the hospitals monitored by the ENH.
Examples of these centers that no longer practice this type of surgery are the Antonio Maria Pinedafrom Barquisimeto, the Barinas Hospital and the Delta Amacuro Hospital.
Castro highlighted that patients who require a surgical intervention of this type must go to other entities, with the impact on expenses and waiting times that this means.
