Mexico will begin review of the T-MEC with Canada

Mexico will begin review of the T-MEC with Canada next week; The goal is to strengthen coalitions with entrepreneurs interested in driving North American growth.

Next week, he Government of Mexico will begin the review of the T-MEC with Canadareported the Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy (SE), Luis Rosendo Gutierrez; and to this end, a delegation of officials will travel to the city of Washington to strengthen coalitions with those interested in promoting the growth of North America.

The delegation will leave next Wednesday and will spend three to four days in Washington, United States, and then leave for Ottawa, Canada.

It should be noted that the three countries that make up this treaty are at a point of change, because in Mexico there was just a change of government headed by Claudia Sheinbaumwhile the United States is about to decide in the November elections the successor of Joe Biden and Canada will still have Justin Trudeau until 2025, although that may vary depending on the political situation in your country.

“We are now going to establish a position with Canada, because they are staying a while longer,” Gutierrez said. during his participation in the 30th Mexican Foreign Trade Congress, organized by the Mexican Council of Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce).

It should be noted that article 34.7 of the T-MEC determines that the agreement will end 16 years after its entry into force, “unless each party confirms that it wishes to continue with this Agreement for a further period of 16 years”. In addition, these procedures establish that a review of the agreement and any recommendations presented by the members of the treaty will be carried out in July 2026.

This first approach, said the official, is about coalitions between the Mexican government and businessmen interested in maintaining the benefits between the three countries and improving the trade agreement.

On the other hand, Gutiérrez assured that it is necessary to make an industrial policy strategically, considering the productions that the United States and Canada plan to bring from Asia. For this reason, he reported that the government of Sheinbaum will prioritize semiconductor industrieselectric cars, batteries, rare minerals, electronics, medical equipment and textiles.
