UK introduces new sanctions against Russian navy
The UK government announced the introduction of new restrictive measures against the Russian maritime fleet on October 17, 2024. The sanctions apply to 18 oil tankers and 4 LNG tankers, which are part of the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation. Ukrinform reports this.
British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy said the measures were part of a strategy to combat Russian criminal activity. He stressed that it is necessary to stop illegal financing of Putin’s war, cyber attacks and barbarity on the front line in Ukraine. Lemmy also noted that the UK is leading the fight against Putin’s attempts to maintain his energy revenues through the threat posed by Russia’s “shadow fleet” to the coastlines of Europe and the world.
New restrictive measures and their consequences for Russia
Under the new sanctions, Russian shadow fleet ships will be banned from visiting UK ports and will lose access to leading British maritime services. The UK government estimates that shadow fleet oil tankers carried around US$4.9 billion worth of oil last year alone. In addition, sanctions apply to 4 LNG tankers and the Russian gas company RusGazDobycha LLC. This brings the total number of Russian oil tankers subject to UK sanctions to 43.
Allegations against Russia of violating the Code of Conduct
In addition to introducing new sanctions, the UK accused Russia of violating the Code of Conduct during the OSCE meeting.
