Mai Watanabe, who was accused of defrauding men of more than 100 million yen by abusing their romantic feelings while calling herself “Riri-chan” , sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison by an appeals court on September 30.
There were moments during the trial when the accused shouted, but her mother, who was visiting the court for the first time, met the accused after the trial and revealed the reason for her tears.
■ I cried with tears when I was sentencing… The appeal court reduced the prison sentence by half a year
Defendant Mai Watanabe (26), also known as Riri-chan, is accused of defrauding three men she met through a dating app, etc., out of 155 million yen to complete by abusing their romantic feelings, breach of the Income Tax Act).
In the appeals court’s decision on the 30th, the Nagoya High Court identified, as the first instance, a selfish motive, but noted that the guests had “Recognized the facts, apologized to the victims, and compensated the victims in part.”
The court rejected the trial court’s decision of nine years in prison and a fine of 8 million yen, and sentenced him to eight years and six months in prison and a fine of 8 million yen. Defendant Watanabe at one point broke down in tears during the sentencing.
Watanabe’s mother attended the appeal court for the first time and was interviewed on camera after the trial.
Watanabe’s mother (September 30):
“You’re doing this (buckets), right? This is the first time I’ve seen it. That’s when I burst into tears.”
Q The judgment of the court of appeal reduced the sentence.
Mother:
“Honestly, I was happy.”
“After listening to the presiding judge’s story, I felt sorry for (the victim).”
A letter Watanabe wrote to his mother in August. Defendant Watanabe’s feelings towards his mother were expressed.

“For some reason, Mai loves Mama so much and loves her so much that she insists, “I’ll be fine without Mama!” But if Mama Mai really does leave, she cries out loud and says, “I want to do it. right things.”
■ The mother who met her again after the appeal court decision…The reason for “crying”
I want to speak properly … The mother met Watanabe at the Nagoya Detention Center on October 3.
Mother:
“I was asked, “Where were you sitting?” and I said, “In the back, on Mai’s side.” She said, “I can’t tell if it’s in the back, it must be in the front.” “This is the last time we’ll see each other, and the next time I’ll be in prison, but I don’t know where I’m going, I want to get out.”
And why did she cry at the trial…
Mother:
“I thought he was crying for the victim in terms of what the presiding judge was saying, but from the way he responded earlier (at the interview), he said, ‘I want to go out. “I believe he accepts the truth. I think he’s crying because he knows he’s going to go to jail in the end.”
Watanabe told a Tokai TV reporter who met him that he hoped to “appeal.” Watanabe said his lawyer advised him not to appeal, but on October 15, Watanabe filed an appeal.
