In the appeals court’s decision on the 30th, the Nagoya High Court identified, as the first instance, a selfish motive, but noted that the guests had “Recognized the facts, apologized to the victims, and compensated the victims in part.”
The court rejected the trial court’s decision of nine years in prison and a fine of 8 million yen, and sentenced him to eight years and six months in prison and a fine of 8 million yen. Defendant Watanabe at one point broke down in tears during the sentencing.

Watanabe told a Tokai TV reporter who met him that he hoped to “appeal.” Watanabe said his lawyer advised him not to appeal, but on October 15, Watanabe filed an appeal.
