The earthquake that occurred on the morning of Wednesday, October 16 in Turkey was particularly strong. Images from the moment of the tremor show its intensity, while seismologists are sounding the alarm.
The seismic tremor was 5.9 on the Richter scale, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center. The epicenter is located 45 km east of the city of Malatea and the focal depth is estimated at 9 km.
SOS on New Earthquake – ‘Located on East Anatolia Fault Zone’
The Turkish professor, Naci Görür, who has warned of strong tremors in various parts of the country, made a first assessment of the new earthquake in Turkey
«A magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred in Akuşağı-Kale/Malatya. It is located on the East Anatolian Rift Zone. As you know, this fault was largely ruptured due to the 2020 Elazığ earthquake. Today’s earthquake is most likely a result of energy transfer to this fault from the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. Don’t worry“, he characteristically notes.

At the same time, the head of the Geology Department of Pamukkale University, Halil Kumsar, after the earthquake, made statements in which he said, “in general, the activity of this area continues. Depending on this activity, it is possible to experience such earthquakes. Because a large area was broken in the Kahramanmaras earthquakes. Since this is a near-surface earthquake, it may cause some damage to weak structures in the epicenter areas. It is necessary to watch it carefully. There will be some aftershocks after that.”.

“There may be building collapses”
The effects of the earthquake are not yet known. However, as Geology professor Efthymis Lekkas pointed out to Mega, there is a possibility of building collapses. While he emphasized that the region is already burdened by past earthquakes and estimates that there will be repercussions.
«It is in a pivotal position. I estimate that there will be some impact, perhaps building collapses, perhaps injuries. It is in a pivotal earthquake area, with buildings damaged by previous earthquakes“, he said.
