The lecture evening in Lucerne at the beginning of October was all about providing information about effective measures to prevent cancer. The event helped raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment among the population. Daniel Scholz, quality manager of the LUKS tumor center, also emphasized this at the start: “Each and every one of us can reduce our personal risk through conscious decisions and regular preventive examinations.”
40 percent of illnesses are preventable
Kerstin Hass, responsible for prevention and early detection at the Central Switzerland Cancer League, was the first speaker to speak about the central role of prevention work. She explained that around 40 percent of all cancers could be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. She placed particular emphasis on avoiding risk factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption as well as the importance of regular early detection measures. This was later also discussed in the lecture by Dr. med. Jonas Werner, senior physician in ear, nose, throat and facial surgery at LUKS, repeated and reinforced.
Healthy eating and sun protection
Alessia Priuli, nutritionist at LUKS, dedicated her lecture to holistic nutrition and its importance for cancer prevention. She explained how a balanced diet – especially one high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains – can reduce the risk of cancer.
Finally, Dr. med. University Emel Türkay, senior physician in dermatology at LUKS, to protect against skin cancer. She discussed the importance of sun protection and regular self-examination of the skin and emphasized that skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Switzerland, but can be effectively prevented through simple measures such as wearing protective clothing and the correct use of sunscreen.
After the lectures, those present had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the experts during an aperitif and ask individual questions.
