A poisonous blue sea snail has been detected in the waters of the southern beaches of Tenerife, Canarian Weekly reports.

The authorities have announced that they will inform when the beaches are safe again.

The species does not produce its own poison, but it eats other poisonous seafood and is able to store their poison in itself.

Touching a blue snail can cause painful skin irritation, swelling and sometimes severe allergic reactions in people.

Tenerife, the largest island of the Canary Islands, is a popular tourist destination where millions of tourists from different parts of the world travel every year.
