(CNN Spanish) – The English Football Association (FA) announced this Wednesday the signing of the German Thomas Tuchel as the new coach of the men’s team.
The FA director, Mark Bullingham, and his sporting director, John McDermott, signed the 18-month contract with the former Chelsea manager on October 8, but had delayed the announcement, to “avoid distractions,” the FA statement said. .
The arrival of Tuchel “concludes an extensive transfer search that began in July, just after the Three Lions’ run to the UEFA EURO 2024 final,” the FA statement said.
“I am very proud to have received the honor of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has already given me some incredible moments. “Having the opportunity to represent England is a great privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting,” Tuchel said.
The German coach’s career includes two league titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain and in Germany with Bayern Munich in the 2022/23 season. His first major trophy was in 2017 when Borussia Dortmund lifted the German Cup and was champion of the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.
Tuchel will be assisted by internationally renowned English coach Anthony Barry, the FA statement states.
“For any Englishman in football, working with the national team is the pinnacle and I didn’t hesitate when Thomas asked me to come and join him again. “I know what a great place St. George’s Park is and the advantage it gives to our England teams, and the support it gives to the coaches,” Barry said in the statement.
The pair will begin work on January 1, 2025 ahead of the qualification process for the 2026 World Cup finals, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The FA added in the statement that interim coach Lee Carsley will remain in charge of the Three Lions until the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League group stage in November, with decisive matches against Greece and Ireland.
