JIS students make Benguk Jack Beans as a solution for diabetes and malnutrition

Jakarta Intercultural School cited research conducted by a student, William Nathan Atmadja, which identified koro benguk beans as the key ingredient in the development of functional foods for diabetes and malnutrition on a larger scale.

Together with Azis Boing Sitanggang, the youngest professor at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB), this research focuses on the production of bioactive peptides, which are small protein components that have various benefits , such as antioxidant, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties.

To date, the development and commercialization of bioactive peptides has often been hindered by limitations in efficient industrial-scale production methods. Here, William uses Enzymatic Membrane Reactor (EMR) technology to develop his invention.

“Through Enzymatic Membrane Reactor technology, we have discovered a method that allows the production of bioactive peptides from koro benguk beans at an industrial scale consistently and efficiently. With the best timing, this process will be able to increase bioactive activity without sacrificing production efficiency,” said William. in an official release.

In this research, it was found that short-term production of bioactive peptides could be done in 7 hours, and for long-term production, the optimal residence time was 12 hours. The result is a peptide with high antioxidant activity, which is important for diabetes management and overall health.

Prof. Azis explained that the peptides produced not only help to regulate blood sugar levels in people suffering from diabetes, but also protect cells body from damage that occurs.

The essential amino acid content in koro benguk beans makes peptides a potential source of protein, especially for those who are malnourished. Therefore,
Prof. Azis assesses that this research has great potential in increasing the added value of local agricultural products in Indonesia.

“Through the production of bioactive peptides, this research can make a significant contribution to public health, in line with the growing trend of functional food, where food is not only a source of nutrition, but also as a health supporter,” he said. .

Now, William is with a research group led by Prof. Azis has been successful in producing peptides with various functions, including inhibition of enzymes related to the regulation of blood pressure and diabetes, as well as antioxidants that work to protect body cells from oxidative damage.

In addition, the jack bean protein hydrolysis process also opens up opportunities for the production of free amino acids that can be used to meet the needs of the body. Therefore, research can be useful for individuals who are malnourished.

Prof. Azis said the use of EMR technology in the production of bioactive peptides was a major innovation, as the process was carried out continuously and therefore had high productivity.

“In this process, different parameters of enhancement can be identified. William did this research, and it showed the possibility of the EMR system being developed for adoption at the business level,” said Prof. Azis.

In the future, this research will also be an opportunity for collaboration between academics and the food industry in developing products based on koro benguk, providing added value in the form of a positive impact on the economy and increasing the value of local agricultural products.

William expressed hope that koro benguk beans have great potential as a solution to health problems such as diabetes and malnutrition.

“With the right cooperation, I am hopeful that the development of functional food based on bioactive peptides from koro benguk beans will be accelerated, so that society at large will feel the health and economic benefits that will come.” out,” said William.

At the same time as supervisor, Prof. Azis admitted that he saw incredible potential in William as a young researcher.

“William shows incredible enthusiasm, the ability to learn quickly, and a high level of commitment to work. This research on jackfruit bean will be presented at the ISoFoST conference at IPB University at the end of October 2024, to get further development support from industry players.
