cold temperature – Telemundo New York (47)

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The weather has been colder than usual in the tri-state area, and Wednesday was another one of those days, with temperatures feeling more like winter.

A freeze advisory has been issued for several counties in New Jersey and the Hudson Valley, and much of the latter and parts of Fairfield County in Connecticut are under a freeze warning. The frost advisory is in place until Thursday morning, with temperatures as low as 30 degrees.

Cold weather arrives Wednesday a day after New York City recorded its coldest morning since late April, while parts of Dutchess and Ulstershire ruled drop below freezing, some even woke up to temperatures in the 20s.

A northwesterly wind has worsened the cold temperature. Monday’s wind gusts exceeded 50 miles per hour. Winds won’t be as strong on Wednesday, but gusts over 20 miles per hour are still expected, making it feel much colder outside.

In mid-October, the average overnight low temperature in Central Park is around 10°C. Through Thursday, the average temperature will be around 10°C cooler than that, closer to what we would expect for the middle of the November. That said, if you haven’t already, it’s time to put on a thicker jacket.

These cold temperatures will be short-lived, but while they last, frost warnings and freeze advisories will be issued for the next two mornings. If you still have plants growing outside, watch for “tender” vegetation and be prepared to cover them or bring them inside if you’re hoping to extend the growing season a little longer.

As far as the average first frost goes, early to mid-October is when we would expect to see below-freezing temperatures in parts of the northern and western Hudson Valley, so we are on the way.

Most of New Jersey remains above freezing until late October. As you approach the New York metropolitan area and across Long Island, that first frost usually waits until November. In Central Park, the average weather is November 13.

Temperatures will begin to rise later in the week. After a cold Thursday morning, we will see a steady increase over the weekend.

In fact, on Saturday, highs will be back in the 70s, and will remain there for most of next week.
