During the Laver Cup in Berlin Roger Federer presents its new racquet series based around the Wilson RF 01.
Wednesday morning, 7:50 am. Roger Federer enters the Uber Arena in Berlin beaming. He unveiled his new Wilson RF 01 racket series as part of the Laver Cup. Opposite are the young players Christopher Thies (16) from Germany and Switzerland’s Noelia Manta. The 15-year-old knows Federer. She is the daughter of his former teammate Lorenzo Manta, together they won their four Davis Cup doubles.
In front of selected guests, including TENNIS MAGAZIN, the Swiss hit the balls on the black court as if he had never left. The advance: still powerful. One-handed backhand: a feast for the eyes. The back slice: razor sharp. The volleys: emotional as ever. The footwork: light-footed. The videos of Federer playing tennis at the age of 43 are spreading fast on social media. While Federer challenges the youngsters Thies and Manta on the other side with his shots, he also talks to former pro Patrick McEnroe about the development of the Wilson RF 01 racket series his, on which he worked hard. “This is really the racket I was hoping to win Wimbledon with,” Federer said of his 320-gram model, the RF 01 Pro.
Federer: “It was not an evolution, but a revolution”
In 2022, the maestro began working with Wilson’s innovation team to develop a racquet for his remaining time on tour. They spent many hours testing and revising the designs. Style elements are inspired by Federer’s personal and professional life, including the iconic RF logo as well as a lace design representing Roger’s home mountains of Switzerland. “It was not an evolution, but a revolution in my mind. I wanted a lighter frame that would be easier to use and play. It cuts well through the air to maintain clubhead speed, which is important for offense but also for defense and some good passing shots. I really like the frame,” says Federer.
The RF 01 line includes three racket models, the RF 01 Pro, Roger’s personally built racket; the RF 01, built for the ideal advanced adult player with a standard weight frame; and the future RF 01. It is ideal for the advanced next generation player who needs a lighter frame to improve their game.
The RF 01 collection also includes sports bags and accessories such as grip straps and vibration dampers. But the focus is on the racket series. “Having spent my entire career with Wilson rackets, I am delighted with the new RF collection that we have developed together,” said Federer, adding: “I am honored to Wilson continues my legacy by creating this game that I love, and I hope that the collection will inspire today’s stars in the same way that I was inspired when I first picked up a Wilson racket.”
