Electors: How many electoral votes are there in Illinois?

The state of Illinois sent 19 voters (“Electoral Votes”) in the Electoral College. This is the body that elects the president and vice president in the USA.

Indirect voting in the USA

In the presidential election, citizens do not vote directly for the candidate, but rather for electors who then cast their votes in the so-called Electoral College. In most states, the “winner takes all” principle applies – the winner receives all of the state’s electors.

In order to win the presidential election, a candidate needs a majority of the 538 electors, i.e. at least 270 votes. This system can result in a candidate winning the presidency even though he or she did not receive the popular vote. The last time this was the case was around 2016, when Democrat Hillary Clinton won the majority of votes (48.2%), but Republican Donald Trump won the majority of voters (304).

Results: How did Illinois vote last?

Illinois has experienced several phases of shifting party dominance in its history. After the Civil War and into the 1920s, the previously Democratic-voting state in the Midwest was Republican-leaning. Then democratic again during the Great Depression and World War II. A period of predominantly Republican victories followed from the early 1950s until Bill Clinton once again turned Illinois into a blue state in the 1992 election. Since then, all elections have clearly gone to Democratic presidential candidates. Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in 2020 by around 17 percentage points.
