The German airline Lufthansa was fined four million dollars (over €3.6 million) in the United States for barring a group of Jewish passengers. It was said that some of the passengers had not worn a face mask – against the rules – and subsequently the whole group was stopped.
The incident took place in May 2022, when a group of 128 passengers from New York were stopped in Frankfurt. They were on their way to Budapest, but Lufthansa did not allow the passengers to continue their journey.

On the flight from New York to Frankfurt, several passengers reportedly refused to wear face masks. This was mandatory at the time due to corona measures. Lufthansa reportedly banned the entire group from the flight to Budapest. Most of the travelers who were stopped were wearing clothes typical of Orthodox Jewish men.
The passengers involved he responded with frustration at the time. For example, a man traveling alone said he had worn a face mask for the entire flight, but was still refused. “I was punished because I am also a Jew,” he said.
One video showed an employee, who appears to be from Lufthansa, telling a passenger that it was Jews from New York who “caused the mess and the problems.” Check out the photos that here:
According to Lufthansa, “an unfortunate series of miscommunications, misinterpretations and misjudgments” led to the decision to deny passengers boarding. There is no discrimination, the airline emphasizes.
The airline apologized to all passengers at the time for the ‘inconvenience’ and personal impact’. “What happened is not in line with Lufthansa’s policies or values. We have zero tolerance for racism, anti-Semitism or discrimination of any kind.”
