Youtube will get a bunch of improvements – over 24 in total – which we will try to summarize in a concise way. However, not all of the improvements are addressed in YouTube’s announcement. We start with an almost stepless control of the playback speed. The software allows speed adjustments as small as 0.05.
The app has improved the mini player that appears when users minimize a video and start scrolling. The floating video can now be moved to any position and the box can be resized.
Other news is best summarized by a bulleted list. All news will not be released at the same time, but will be sent out in stages during late autumn.
- A sleep timer so that you can doze off in front of YouTube. When the timer expires, the video pauses and then the screen turns off as usual based on the screen’s specified time limit.
- Design improvements to simplify the app.
- Shared playlists with, for example, family and friends. On televisions, it will be possible to scan a QR code to join a playlist.
- For shared playlists, it is possible to vote on the videos, to democratically decide the playback order.
- Users can give playlists their own images (thumbnails), like in Spotify. It is possible to use existing images or generate new ones with AI.
- Several different badges (“badges”) users of YouTube and YouTube Music can get and collect after they reach various milestones.
- Improvements to Youtube on TVs, like new colors and effects.
- Autoplay of a video when users visit a channel on televisions, which is intended to act as a teaser/trailer for the channel.
