The freighter that sank near Borgharen has not yet been saved. The restoration of the ship failed because a cable broke, writes News L1. Rijkswaterstaat is investigating the cause of the cable break.
Rijkswaterstaat has been preparing to recover the cargo ship since Monday night. The first attempt to pull the ship free started around 1pm. An hour later, the line connecting the pontoon to the shore snapped. The work was subsequently stopped.
New equipment is needed for a second attempt and Rijkswaterstaat hopes to make a second attempt tonight.
The length of the ship is 67 meters he hit Saturday due to a strong current against the Borgharen weir in the Meuse near Maastricht, after which the ship took on water and sank. Two members of the crew were taken overboard by the fire brigade. No one was injured.
Once the ship is saved, the damage to the ship can be inspected.
Temporary restraint
As a result of the accident, Rijkswaterstaat cannot close the dam. Part of the ship is anchored in the shipping hatch of the barge. As a result, the water flows away faster than usual and the water level in the Meuse between Belgium and Borgharen falls.
As a result, Bosscherveld will now have temporary flood protection raised. These activities are proceeding according to plan. Filling of the temporary barrier began around 3pm.
