ROMA – They were very challenging for theUNICEF the logistical challenges of completing the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip. The first round of vaccinations, which began in September, subjected humanitarian workers to enormous difficulties, including operating amid devastated infrastructure. 75% of the pre-existing cold chain, essential for any vaccination campaign, was destroyed over the last year, when the war devastated the entire Strip. To solve the problem, in addition to 1.6 million doses of vaccines, UNICEF had to bring in refrigerators, freezers, coolers and vaccine transport containers, all equipment needed to keep supplies at a temperature between 2 and 8°C.
The interminable movements of the population. Another major challenge was represented by the endless population movements. In the northern Gaza Strip, several displacement orders have been issued affecting thousands of children. Once again – underlines a note released by UNICEF – it will be essential not only to respect the humanitarian pauses located in the North, but also to prevent people from being forced to move from one area to another. This will be essential to be able to vaccinate at least 90% of children under 10 among the population of the North.
Messages to warn the population. There is the problem of ensuring that families are adequately informed about this second cycle of vaccinations: this is another very important element. More than 800 social activists will reach families to raise awareness about the importance of undergoing the second dose, as well as the dates and locations. As already tested during the administration of the first cycle, radio commercials will also be broadcast and SMS messages will be launched, as well as in all digital channels available in Gaza to spread these messages as much as possible. It will be an awareness raising activity that will continue until the end of the second cycle.
