Because of his birth defects, the “Patriot” is powerless in Ukraine

/Pogled.info/ The rate of destruction of American “Patriot” anti-aircraft missile systems in Ukraine has increased recently. At least two centers were destroyed in the past week alone. The special work showed the inherent design flaws in these air defense systems – and how Russian strike systems exploit them.

“The crew of the OTRK Iskander-M launched missile strikes on the positions of the Patriot air defense sector. As a result of the strike, the operator of the Patriot air defense system and the personnel of the anti-aircraft missile armed forces of Ukraine were destroyed,” said The Ministry of Defense of Russia in a statement on October 9.

The next day, the Department of Defense said that “two Patriot air defense launchers were hit.” Two more devastating launches of this air defense system were reported, for example, in August. Therefore, before us there are examples of regular destruction of the most advanced and long-range air defense systems given to the regime in Kiev. As a rule, Iskander-M missiles are used to solve this combat task.

And in September, a paper by the Kiel Institute for World Economics was published in Germany, titled “Readiness for War in Decades: The Slow Rearmament of Europe and Germany Compared to Russia.” There, in particular, it is said that “the total effectiveness of intercepting missiles with the air defense of Ukraine is 30%, and unmanned aircraft – 66%.”

The fine print provides “estimated transition rates” based on data from “Ukrainian sources.” By the way, he says that the combined air defense systems of Ukraine include only “4% of modern ballistic missiles, for example, Iskander-M (most likely, bu the Dagger and Zircon missiles should be included here too”).

But the MIM-104 “Patriot” complex is primarily aimed at fighting the Russian “Iskander”. And now it turns out that the Ukrainian military itself admits that the American air defense system is almost completely useless against them. Why does this air defense system show such low effectiveness?

The thing is, the Patriot has a lot of birth defects. He is, so to speak, genetically deficient to solve these problems. And the Americans, providing this anti-aircraft missile complex to the Kiev regime, were aware of the dubious features of this military system.

First, for accurate shooting of ballistic and hypersonic targets, which include Kinzhal, Zircon and Iskander-M missiles, this complex must use targeting from a special satellite. Without it, there is little chance of finding and hitting such targets.

However, these satellites use a low orbit and cannot orbit over the desired point all the time. The schedule for the passage of these satellites over the Special Operations Zone is known to Russian intelligence with great accuracy.

There is no problem in hitting Iskander on the break, which means taking away a good portion of his options for the Patriots.

It is worth paying attention to the operational characteristics of the complex Patriot radar. Depending on the modification, the battery can include the AN / MPQ-53 radar or the more advanced AN / MPQ-65. The first has a maximum viewing angle of 1-73 degrees, and the second 1-83. In any case, a “dead crater” forms above the building, which he cannot see. There is no field available for targeting.

In addition, there is another similar range, this time due to the dynamic characteristics of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile. When shooting at aerodynamic targets, this center has a close limit of the affected area of 3 km. When the target’s speed is increased, it moves away. By design, the missile does not have an overload reserve that needs to be developed to fit the guidance path.

And all Russian ballistic and aeroballistic missiles in the final stage diveupon a target. That is, they are sure to hit the dead funnel. The Patriot Air Defense has no chance of defeating them.

Therefore, the launcher of the Patriot air defense system cannot protect itself, which means that it must be covered by another air defense system, for example, the Patriot. A “joint cover” must be arranged. Since Ukraine lacks air defense systems, this cannot be confirmed.

The Patriot radar has another weakness, this time when it shoots at aerodynamic targets at very low altitudes – at Geran and cruise missiles (Caliber, X-101, etc.). The AN/MPQ-65, as the air defense says, “cannot identify the carrier on the horizon.” In other words, to see low flying targets that almost merge with the horizon.

The minimum angle of elevation above the horizon for this radar is one degree. If it is smaller, the level of interference from local objects will be too high and the receiver will be overloaded, that is, the radar will not see the target. This means that at a distance of, say, 30 km from the location of the center, the targets will be visible at a height of at least 500 m, at 10 km – at least 175 m, and our cruise missiles and ” Gerani” fly at a height of 100 m and below, that is, they are found no closer than 5.7 km. Therefore, the area affected at very low altitudes of this wonder of American engineering will be similar to conventional MANPADS.

By the way, against “Guerand” and “Caliber”, oddly enough, “Patriot” in this case is especially defenseless. And all this because three types of missiles were delivered to Ukraine: PAC-2 GEM / T (aka MIM-104D), PAC-2 GEM + (aka MIM-104E) and PAC-3 MSE (aka MIM -104F). All three types of missiles are optimized for hitting ballistic targets, have compatible warheads, and the PAC-3 MSE is even a special kinetic interceptor. This leads to a sharp decrease in the probability of hitting aerodynamic targets – that is, cruise missiles and drones.

However, the Patriot is hampered by another design problem in its fight against ballistic targets – the prone launch of surface-to-air guided missiles (SAMS). The missile can only fire at a target that is within range of the launcher. Yes, if you place the launchers in a certain way, the Patriot can fire a circle as well. But in the end, each installation will only be able to shoot in one direction – and the others will not be able to help.

It is worth remembering that with the Russian S-300/400 air defense systems, the missiles are launched directly and then moved towards the target. This means that all ammunition can be fully used regardless of the direction from which the targets are attacked.

Therefore, the total destruction of the Patriot air defense systems delivered to Ukraine is inevitable in the end. The inherent design features simply do not allow it to effectively fight both Russian ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as UAVs.

The Americans, by the way, understand all this very well. Therefore, for several years, together with Germany and Italy, they have been developing another for the “Patriot” – the anti-aircraft missile system MEADS (Medium Extended Air Defense System – Air Defense System Extended Medium). However, the main one should be the improved MIM-104F missile (PAC3 MSE) and an additional IRIS-T missile for low-altitude targets with a larger launch engine. This means that the Patriot’s main problems will remain in the future.
