/ world today news/ The attempt of Ukrainian drones to strike the Kremlin was clearly perceived by the Russian authorities as an intention to kill President Vladimir Putin. The Western media also do not doubt this, they predict retaliatory actions against Kiev and try to protect Ukraine. What else is written in the West?
Attempted assassination of Putin
The Washington Post reported that Russian authorities on Wednesday accused Ukraine of trying to attack the Kremlin overnight with two drones. Moscow denounced the attempted attack as a “terrorist act” and said defense systems disabled the drones before they could strike, the newspaper said.
“The Kremlin described the incident as a deliberate attempt to assassinate Putin on the eve of Victory Day, which Russia celebrates on May 9,” the article said.
Another American publication, the Daily Beast, published an article under the title “Kremlin claims that Putin survived the assassination attempt.”
The article said Muscovites reported two explosions on the night of May 3 over the Kremlin “before the lights went out there.”
The most daring attempt
The New York Times, in turn, points out that the Kremlin not only views the drone attack as a terrorist attack and an assassination attempt against the president, but also states that it “reserves the right to retaliate whenever and wherever it sees fit. “
“If confirmed, it would be the most audacious attempt to strike Russian territory since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February,” the article said.
He also notes that Russia has faced a series of drone strikes on its territory in recent months. Some of those craft landed near Ukraine’s border with Russia, but at least one landed south of Moscow. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for most of the incidents, the newspaper said.
Bloomberg made similar assessments. It is interesting that after the news about the very attempt to attack the Kremlin, the agency immediately recalled the Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory. The subtext is captured, they say, “this is how these Russians should be”:
“If confirmed, this attack on the compound, which for centuries has symbolized Russia’s official power, would be a decisive step in bringing the threat of war inside the country.
Since Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine last February, Russian missiles and drones have repeatedly struck the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and other cities, including as recently as this week.”
Bloomberg also notes that the Kremlin’s announcement comes as the country prepares to celebrate Victory Day on May 9, Russia’s main holiday commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.
In addition, Bloomberg is trying to create a feeling among readers that the Russian authorities are already very afraid of strikes and therefore decided to cancel a number of holiday events.
About a dozen cities in Russia canceled parades and other public events for May 9, citing unspecified security concerns. Many have canceled fireworks.
Well, among other things, Russia has already strengthened the defense of Moscow, the agency writes:
Since last year, Russia has deployed anti-aircraft systems in and around the capital to bolster defenses. In recent months, there have been several reports of drones of various sizes falling in regions outside of Moscow.
“symbolic act”
The influential American business newspaper Wall Street Journal gives an interesting assessment. He writes that, in fact, Kiev hardly had a real chance of a successful assassination attempt on Putin:
“Putin is known to spend extended periods outside of Moscow at several residences at his disposal in Sochi, Valdai and elsewhere, potentially making any attempt to strike at the Kremlin more of a symbolic act.”
Why is such an act necessary? The publication believes that to show “the weakness of Moscow’s air defense”, and not at all to carry out an attack against the Russian leader.
At the same time, American journalists are trying to protect the West in this situation – they say that if these are Ukrainians, then we have nothing to do with it:
“The US provided intelligence to Ukrainian forces during the conflict, but warned Kiev not to attack Russian territory.”
The newspaper recalls that Moscow has accused Ukraine of a series of sabotage attacks, including explosions that toppled electricity poles in the Leningrad region, damaged railway lines in the Bryansk region and blew up fuel depots in Crimea.
Ukraine has made it a rule not to comment on Moscow’s accusations, the newspaper notes. At the same time, attacks in Russia itself increased:
“The strike on central Moscow follows a series of drone attacks in Russia and acts of sabotage on Russian soil that demonstrate the ability to go far beyond the front lines and may foreshadow a planned offensive by Ukrainian forces.”
Russia does not intend to let this happen just like that, the publication is confident, as “the Russian military has previously threatened to strike the headquarters of the government in Kiev after earlier Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.”
“Earlier this week, Russia said it carried out a series of missile strikes on a number of military and defense industry facilities,” the US publication said.
“Kiev said it was able to repel a large volley of Russian missiles earlier this week after receiving Patriot air defense systems, making it unclear how successful Moscow would be in launching an attack on downtown Kyiv and government buildings.” writes the newspaper about possible retaliatory strikes from Russia.
“Ukraine has nothing to do with this”
France’s Figaro was one of the first to publish Kyiv’s first reaction.
“More than an hour after Russia’s statement, Ukraine sent a message to reporters that it had ‘nothing to do’ with the drone attack on the Kremlin, Volodymyr Zelensky’s adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said,” the article said.
Podoliak also added that Kiev is allegedly not interested in such strikes, as they “have no military value,” the French newspaper reported.
What of this?
Even on the first, still not very complete assessment of the reaction of the Western media, it is clear that they adopted several narratives at the same time.
First, the target of the attack was this very “symbolic act”, not the success of the assassination attempt against Putin.
The second narrative is that Russia is supposedly dealing crushing blows to Ukraine, so even if the attack on the Kremlin is the work of the Ukrainians, “we understand them and do not condemn them.”
Third, Russia is very afraid of Ukrainian terrorist attacks, which have recently become more frequent. Russian authorities are afraid and cancel official events.
Fourth, Ukraine has switched to the tactics of war on enemy territory and is doing so successfully. There are already enough examples.
It is obvious that in the near future the Western media community will spin the idea that if Kiev organized the attack, then it was absolutely right.
The assassination attempt against Putin will almost certainly be called a good deed. Along with the affairs of the Ukrainians, in every article you will read that Russia is dealing terrible blows to Ukraine, civilians are suffering, etc. And all this is by no means the first attempt to justify something for which there is no justification – terrorism and fascism.
