The government of Nicaragua broke diplomatic relations with Israel on Friday in rejection of what it described as a “brutal genocide” against the Palestinians in Gaza, according to an official statement issued in Managua.
“The government of the Republic of Nicaragua breaks all diplomatic relations with the fascist government of Israel,” the statement said after expressing its “permanent solidarity with the people and government of Palestine.”
The decision, which had been advanced by Vice President Rosario Murillo, wife of President Daniel Ortega, was made based on a resolution of the Parliament dominated by the ruling party, approved earlier on Friday and in which “the continued genocide, the cruelty, extreme hatred and extermination carried out by the Israeli government.
“Our president has instructed the Chancellery of the Republic (…) to proceed with the breaking of diplomatic relations with the fascist and genocidal government of Israel,” Murillo said hours before the statement was issued.
Demand a free and sovereign State of Palestine
The Ortega government also reiterated to Israel its demand that it comply with “all the resolutions of the United Nations, for the creation of the State of Palestine, as a free, sovereign, independent and self-determined State.”
The Near East is on high alert due to further regional escalation after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on October 1. Iran backs the Lebanon-based Hezbollah group, which Israel has recently attacked.
In the statement, the Sandinista Executive condemned “once again this genocide, the occupation and the permanent aggression against the life and dignity of the people of Palestine, which now extends against the people of Lebanon, and seriously threatens Syria.” , Yemen and Iran, endangering the peace and security of the region and the World.

A year ago, Daniel Ortega’s government declared itself “always in solidarity with the Palestinian cause” and condemned the “worsening” of the “terrible” Israel-Palestine conflict.
