Port-au-Prince. Gunmen invaded another town north of Haiti’s capital on Thursday, shooting people and setting homes on fire just a week after a massacre of 155 people in the country’s central region. At first the number of victims was unknown.
Residents of the coastal town of Arcahaie called radio stations asking for help and asking the police to come and help them.
Lionel Lazarre, second police spokesperson, told Radio Caraïbes that there were already police officers on the scene and that measures are being taken to strengthen the police presence in the area.
“The police heard the people of Arcahaie shouting for help,” he said.
Radio Télé Monopole reported that the assailants arrived at dawn, shooting and setting fire to homes, especially in the communities of Vigner and Bercy.
Several radio stations reported that the attack was the work of a gang from the Canaan region known as the Taliban. The gang has about 200 members and operates mostly in the northern sector of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Arcahaie is located between Port-au-Prince and Pont-Sondé, where another gang, Gran Grif, is accused of carrying out another massacre on Thursday last week in which more than 155 people died.
While most gang violence is centered in Port-au-Prince – 80 percent of which is controlled by criminal groups – it has spread north of the capital in recent years, especially in the central Artibonite region.
