The KKE parliamentary group submitted a question to the Minister of National Defense on the punishments of soldiers, after the uproar caused by the participation of a young soldier in an anti-war event. The young soldier, a member of the KNE, was taken to the disciplinary office after appearing wearing his uniform and beret with the national emblem at the event.
In their question, the MPs call for the sentences to be revoked and to stop punishing young conscripts. It is emphasized that “it is an elementary and inalienable right of soldiers to express themselves politically and to participate in popular and peaceful demonstrations against wars and our country’s involvement in them”.
They add that “the right of the soldiers to participate together with the people in the mobilizations against the war is not abolished or suspended as long as they serve their term and they cannot be punished, whether they wear uniform or civilian clothes during their participation. The sentence and accusations against the soldiers are baseless and unsubstantiated, they are intimidation and aimed at silencing them.”
In their question, the MPs pose the following question to the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias: “What measures does the government intend to take in order to revoke the sentences and stop punishing the young soldiers, who participate with the people in the fight against imperialist war and the country’s participation in it”.
The question of the KKE in detail
In the past days throughout Greece, the people and the youth with mass demonstrations expressed their opposition to the participation of our country and the Armed Forces in the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, to the support of the murderous state, Israel.
It is an elementary and inalienable right of soldiers to express themselves politically and to participate in popular and peaceful demonstrations against wars and our country’s involvement in them.
Immediately, a vicious campaign of targeting and terrorizing them was launched from various quarters. An attack is launched by the government with the imposition of a prison sentence on two infantrymen, disciplinary proceedings against others, appointments of a ND MP, also by a well-known SYRIZA MP and other well-known extreme right-wingers.
The young conscripts serve their term to defend the country’s territorial integrity and sovereign rights and not to participate in imperialist wars.
The government and all parties of the NATO arc are accountable for supporting NATO and our country’s participation in wars.
The right of infantrymen to participate with the people in demonstrations against the war is not abrogated or suspended while they are serving their term, and they cannot be punished, whether they wear uniform or civilian clothes during their participation.
The sentence and accusations against the soldiers are baseless and unsubstantiated, they are intimidating and aimed at silencing them.
The Minister is asked what measures the government intends to take in order to revoke the sentences and stop punishing the young soldiers who participate with the people in the struggle against the imperialist war and the country’s participation in it.
