What happened?
In commemoration of the 14 years since the rescue of the 33 miners from the San José minean event was held with the presence of various political figures and survivors of the collapse. The ceremony, which began at noon with an emotional Eucharist, honored the memory of the late former president Sebastian Piñera.
Among those attending were the president of the Senate, José García Ruminot; will express it dama, Cecilia Morel; Luis Urzuashift leader of the miners at the time of the accident; Laurence Golborne, who was the Minister of Mining at that time; the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei; the senator Rodrigo Galilea; yGloria Hutt, president of Evópoli.

Omar Reygadas, one of the survivors, dedicated some heartfelt words to his partner Mario Gómez, who died last September, and to the former president: “We are missing two important people, we are missing our brother (Mario Gómez) and we are missing the person who made this possible, with his contacts and his people. But I know that they are in good hands, they are with our heavenly father”.
The message from former first lady Cecilia Morel
The former first lady, Cecilia Morel, recalled the moment when the country learned of the survival of the miners. “How can we forget that August 22, with the famous little piece of paper… Sebastián (Piñera) was there by her side and had promised her that he was going to get the miners out. And that glorious call… it was a day of sorrow for the departure of my father, but this wonderful news was also very beautiful and very exciting,” he explained.

Morel stressed that “this tribute for me, for my family, for my children, for my grandchildren, is of deep meaning… Here is his living mark. Here’s what he was”. Furthermore, he urged those present to “follow the example of the rescue… that unity, that vision, a collective work where there were no political differences, there was a great objective: life“.
The ceremony concluded with the installation of a commemorative plaque and flag number 34 in memory of former President Piñerawith the attendance of 13 of the 33 miners.
