The Drake May era in New England is here, and the Patriots are throwing the rookie quarterback into the deep end with a debut against the Houston Texans, a legitimate Super Bowl contender. The Texans are road touchdown favorites and have a chance to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Despite Houston’s strong record, the Texans have yet to realize their full offensive potential due to inconsistent play. Most notably, wide receiver Nico Collins was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Collins, by far the best pass rusher and a major threat for the Texans, averaged over 17 yards per catch with three touchdowns. Without him, Stefon Diggs could have an undefeated game. Diggs has 31 receptions on the year and has become a major threat in the passing game over the past two weeks.
As for May, he could probably give him a rude welcome to the NFL.
The Patriots don’t offer much help around him, with few players with impressive skills and a battered offensive line. Additionally, he faces a Texans defense that has allowed the fourth-fewest yards per game through the first five weeks.
The Patriots are patient with Maye and hope not to rush him to work. But after averaging just 12.4 points per game through five weeks and showing few (if any) signs of improvement, New England has reached a breaking point and needs to give the rookie quarterback a chance.
While the Texans should be favorites to win the game, Houston is just 1-4 against the spread as a road favorite since the start of the 2023 season. Meanwhile, New England is 1-4-2 against the spread as helpless place.
