The Ottendorf library is a sturdy brick building with the words “Free Library and Reading Hall” written on the front. There is still a library in the building from 1884 – which, from a German perspective, is distinguished by the fact that it is not in any small German town, but in the middle of busy 2nd Avenue in Manhattan.
