Start vaccinating against the RS virus in autumn 2025

Secretary of State Karremans (VWS) has decided to add the vaccine against the respiratory syncytial virus (RS virus) to the National Vaccination Programme. The RS virus is the most common cold virus in children. The RS virus mostly occurs in winter and causes respiratory infections. This can make a child very sick. The aim is to start in autumn 2025.

Secretary of State Karremans: “It is important that we properly protect children from various infectious diseases. That is why I am also pleased that we can add the injection against the RS virus, the RSV injection, to the National Immunization Programme. I follow the advice of the Health Council and ensure that babies in the Netherlands can be protected from the RS virus in the first year of life. This will prevent a lot of suffering for newborns and their parents and reduce the pressure on healthcare, such as hospital admissions.”

The RIVM was asked to make careful preparations. The aim is to start offering the RSV vaccine to babies in the first year of life in the Netherlands in autumn 2025.
