Nicaragua cuts diplomatic ties with Israel
Nicaragua is cutting diplomatic ties with Israel, Rosario Murillo, the Central American country’s vice president, announced on Friday.
The vice president, who is the wife of President Daniel Ortega, said her husband had ordered the government to “cut diplomatic ties with the fascist and genocidal government of Israel.” Previously, Nicaragua’s National Assembly (parliament) had asked the government to consider diplomatic ties.
The move is largely symbolic, as diplomatic relations between the two countries are minimal.
The announcement in Nicaragua comes as Israel comes under increasing diplomatic pressure over the war in Gaza and attacks on Lebanon.
Because of the war in Gaza, Colombian President Gustavo Petro severed diplomatic relations with Israel in May and called the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “genocide”. and he compared the war in Gaza to the Holocaust.
