Numerous canceled flights, train delays, fallen roofs or power outages are part of the trail of damage that the powerful storm Kirk has caused in Spain, with hurricane-force winds that have reached gusts of 205 kilometers per hour, which is now moving towards the center and northern Europe.
The remains of Hurricane Kirk, which over the weekend even reached category 4 as it passed through the open waters of the Atlantic, have headed towards Europe and this Wednesday (10/09/2024) have put all of Spain on alert except for the Canary Islands, at a third of France and part of Portugal, and it is expected that in the next few hours they will also advance to Switzerland, Belgium and Germany.
Turned into a deep storm, Kirk has had a special impact on northern Spain, with hurricane-force wind gusts of up to 205 km/h in Picos de Europa, in addition to intense rains in the country and waves up to seven meters high.
In the region of Galicia, to the northwest, the impacts of the storm have left numerous incidents, mainly on the Atlantic coast, a lot of rain and one person slightly injured when the top of a tree fell on them.
Another of the most affected areas has been Cantabria, where consultations at the Tres Mares hospital have had to be suspended due to the detachment of sheets from the façade and all flights from Seve Ballesteros airport have been diverted.
Also alert in France
About thirty of the hundred departments of France, particularly in the northwest of the country, are on orange alert this Wednesday due to the risk of heavy rain and wind with the passage of the former Hurricane Kirk, converted into an Atlantic storm.
From the north of the Atlantic coast to the Belgian border, which includes the Paris region, it is warned that rainfall today alone could reach 50 to 70 liters per square meter, 60 to 80 in Champagne Ardennes and locally up to 90 in Pays de la Loire and Vendée.
For its part, in Portugal there have been almost half a thousand incidents due to strong winds and rain in the north of the country, with delays in trains and the fall of hundreds of trees.
