Representatives of the group of five nuclear-armed countries will meet in New York in the near future, state news agency RIA reported, citing a statement by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
The group consists of Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain, all nuclear-weapon countries and permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Ryabkov may not have announced the date of the meeting nor mentioned the level of officials who will participate in it, but in essence this will be the first direct meeting in a closed group of all the major “players” of the war Ukrainian.
The war taking place on European soil, and especially some moves by Kiev and its allies, which Moscow characterizes as escalation moves, have brought frequent threats to use nuclear weapons on the part of Russia, which has even recently revised the its core doctrine.
Just last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow was expanding the list of scenarios that could prompt it to consider detonating a nuclear weapon.
As noted, in January 2022, a few weeks before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the “five nuclear powers” issued a joint statement in which they stated that they considered avoiding war between nuclear powers and reducing strategic risks as their top priorities.
“We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” they said at the time.
The planned meeting is indeed extremely critical at the present time and is sure to be a fuse of developments, since in fact it is the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine that Russia and China are sitting at the same table with the US, the Britain and France on a topic of debate, a critical issue for world order. The meeting is likely to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in the coming weeks.
