Mexico City. After celebrating that the Senate ratified Juan Ramón de la Fuente as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, whom she considered a man “with a lot of experience and knowledge,” President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo affirmed that the current ambassadors remain, and some of them, she said , must be ratified.
In particular, he mentioned that Asín Moctezuma will continue as diplomatic representative of Mexico in the United States, and Quirino Ordaz in Spain, a country with which, he said, relations are not broken, although – he maintained – there is still no formal response to the letter he sent. former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to King Felipe VI, to apologize for the wrongs committed in the Conquest.
In her press conference at the National Palace, the president mentioned that Juan Ramón de la Fuente “is going to make a great chancellor” and will meet with the ambassadors, except with those of those countries with which there are no relations, such as Ecuador.
“There are relations with Spain, there is no suspension. There is a commercial and tourist relationship; cultural relations; many Spaniards live in Mexico…”
He indicated that not having invited the King of Spain to his inauguration has to do with the fact that they did not respond to the letter that López Obrador cordially sent for an apology, and they did not respond “as should be the case in diplomatic relations. “They didn’t answer.”
Instead, he questioned, they leaked the letter and then a statement came out in a media outlet from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He accused that it was a “disparagement” for his predecessor. “It wasn’t López Obrador, it was the president of Mexico to whom they made that contempt. And so far there is no formal response, only in the media, about what opinion they have about this.”
The president questioned that a Vox representative said that “they came to civilize the tribes in Mexico,” when “the conquest was a violent act. Let’s just talk about the Cholula and Templo Mayor massacres. Obviously they are not the Spaniards of today, but a recognition that there were things that were not right allows us to reconstruct the past.”
That, he maintained, would strengthen the relationship with Spain. “The relationship is not broken at all,” and he said that the ambassador in that country holds meetings.
