Panathinaikos defender George Baldock (†31) was found dead in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Greece. The 12-time international player worked for many years in England, where he scored 83 starts in the Premier League for Sheffield United. His death was confirmed by the management of the Greek Super League.
Baldock left England after a successful seven-year spell with Sheffield United in both the Championship and Premier League this summer to join Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League.
The management of the local competition confirmed the death of the 31-year-old player in an official statement on Wednesday evening.
“The entire Super League football family is deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer George Baldock and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” the statement read.
After breaking into senior football with MK Dons, Baldock earned a move to Sheffield United in 2017 and was instrumental in two promotions to the top flight.
He also made thirty-eight starts in the 2019/20 season, which the Blades finished in an impressive ninth place in the table. The defender was a fan favorite at Bramall Lane, making a total of 219 starts for United with six goals and 16 assists.
He has 12 starts for the Greek national A-team, in the current season he started in four competitive games for Panathinaikos.
