The European Parliament adopted a resolution regarding “strengthening the resilience of the Republic of Moldova before the upcoming presidential elections and the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU.”
MPs called countries that gave asylum to Moldovan politicians like The shore of Ilan (the leader of the opposition bloc “Victory” is in Russia) and Vladimir Plahotniuc (apparently a former leader of the Democratic Party in Northern Cyprus), extradited to the Republic of Moldova for trial.
The document also accuses Russia of introducing hybrid intervention in the internal affairs of the Republic of Moldova. In particular, actions “aimed at undermining the electoral process, security, sovereignty and democratic foundations of the Republic of Moldova” are condemned. Russia is also accused of “inciting division in Moldovan society and trying to disrupt the pro-European course of the country before the presidential elections and the referendum on European integration.”
In their resolution, European representatives refer to information received from the Intelligence and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova. The ISS, without providing evidence, claims that Russia “invested about 100 million euros in undermining the electoral process to persuade Moldovans to vote against going to – into the European Union. “
Let’s remember that Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor left Moldova after the parliamentary elections in 2019, when the Democratic Party surrendered power to the provisional coalition of the Socialist Party Igor Dodon and the ACUM bloc (Action and Solidarity party May Sandu and DA Platform Andrew Nastase). The former leader of the Democratic Party disappeared from the information space (not one country officially confirmed the whereabouts of the oligarch), and Shor began a political struggle with the Sandu regime, which handed over power a year later that. Currently, he heads the Moldovan opposition bloc “Victory”.
In Moldova, Ilan Shor was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison for financial crimes. Until recently, he lived in Israel, which refused to extradite the businessman wanted by Interpol, questioning the validity of the sentence against him. Later, Shor acquired Russian citizenship and moved to the Russian Federation.
Currently, Ilan Shor and Vladimir Plahotniuc, as well as most representatives of the Moldovan opposition, are included in the EU sanctions list.
