Social media influencer Veera Bianca discusses the one-sided body image and body discrimination in the Finnish media field in a recent episode of his Kehorauhaa podcast. Veera Bianca’s guest is a multitasking expert in the TV industry Jantsu Puumalainenwho works, among other things, as a screenwriter and director as well as a performance coach.

The native of Puuma has experience in, among other things, making love reality shows. Puumalainen subscribes to the notion that people of a certain look and size are wanted on television, even if the creators try to promote diversity.

According to Puumalainen, Actors also often suffer from appearance pressure. Someone may move from the television to the stage of the theater to hide close-ups if their appearance changes as a result of, for example, weight gain.

– I know that many actors are on an eternal diet. The fact that you do twelve-hour shooting days, on top of that you spend all your days off at the gym with a personal trainer and eat Nutrilett soups, or you have a strict diet to stay in shape at 34. It’s absolutely absurd, Puumalainen marvels in the podcast.

Veera Bianca and Puumalainen agree that appearance pressure is primarily directed at women. The presence of a fat man is generally more acceptable in the media field than a fat woman.

However, the person from Puuma also has experience with body discrimination against men. Puumalainen tells about the auditions of a television series in which he was part of the casting. According to Puumalainen, one of the men who auditioned for the role was of average weight or slightly bigger than average weight and had a less trained body.

The man in question was Puumalainen’s favorite for the role and passed on his proposal. However, the producer disagreed.

– The producer replied (to the e-mail) and wrote that who is this fat guy, why have you filmed such a test for this, Puumalainen says of the answer he received.

Puumalainen says that he was so enraged by the comment that he stopped working in that casting for that position.

Puumalainen says in the podcast that the man who participated in the audition does not know that he has been commented on in this way.

Puumalainen does not say which television program is being produced or who the producer who made the comment was.
