Cuba expresses rejection of release of attacker against its embassy in the US

Havana. The Cuban government expressed on Friday its strong rejection of the release of the man accused of the 2020 shooting against its embassy in Washington.

The Foreign Ministry “strongly rejects a new act of complicity by the United States with terrorist violence against Cuba,” the agency said in a press statement.

American media reported this week that a district judge agreed to order the conditional release starting October 15 of Alexander Alazo, the man who carried out the shooting against the diplomatic representation. Among other things, he demanded that he undergo psychiatric treatment, that he not leave his house at night or leave central Pennsylvania without authorization, in addition to staying away from facilities of the Cuban government and its employees in the United States.

For Cuba, the attack “against a diplomatic headquarters and with the declared objective of causing damage, would qualify in any country as a terrorist act,” the communication indicates.

However, he considered that the United States “at no time had the intention of prosecuting the perpetrator as a terrorist, despite the fact that the nature of his acts are explicitly classified in US legislation against that scourge.”

In May 2024, Cuba had expressed its “concern” over the ruling of a judge who “acquitted” Alazo of the four charges against him.

This man, who was 42 years old at the time of the attack and was a resident of Texas, was charged with “assault with intent to kill,” after being arrested in possession of unregistered weapons and ammunition a few days after the attack, which he did not caused injuries.

The shooting left marks on the Doric columns at the entrance, broke a street lamp, and several windows and moldings on the front of the building.

In September 2023, another attack was recorded with two Molotov cocktails against the Cuban embassy in the US capital, which also did not leave anyone injured, but unleashed a cross-talk of accusations between both foreign ministries.

Cuba and the United States maintain a tense relationship due to the tightening of the embargo against the island during the administration of Donald Trump (2017-2021), which included the island on the black list of sponsors of terrorism, which seriously hinders financial and commercial flows. towards the island. President Joe Biden has not reversed this decision.
