We have been celebrating National Education Day since 1972. The date of October 14 is not accidental. On this day, in 1773, the National Education Commission was established. It was the first ministry in Europe to deal with education reform. Today, this day is an opportunity to show respect and gratitude for the hard work not only of teachers, but of all education workers.
Teachers’ Day 2024: Is it a day off from school?
The document that regulates the celebration of National Education Day is the Teacher’s Charter. Its article 74 states that October 14 is a day off from classes. So it would seem that it’s a day off from school. However, this is not entirely true.
On the other hand, Teacher’s Day is not a public holiday. This means that education workers must work on that day and provide care for students while their parents work. In short, Teachers’ Day 2024 is a day off from classes, but not from school.
Since National Education Day is not a public holiday, teachers must be present on the day. And it doesn’t end there, students also have to come to school. This means that the facility is supposed to provide them with care and safety during classes. It usually ends with students and employees coming to school on Teacher’s Day, but no traditional lessons take place then. The management and teaching council of each institution decide what the classes will look like that day.
These are often ceremonial assemblies, performances, games and activities in which students have the opportunity to show gratitude to all school employees for their hard work. Therefore, there is no need to do homework the day before and prepare for quizzes or tests, and on the other hand, parents do not have to worry about providing care for their children that day. Teachers do not receive an additional day off for working on this day.
Teachers’ Day does not apply to academic teachers
Anyone who thinks that all teachers celebrate October 14 would be wrong. University lecturers celebrate their day earlier, on October 5. This is due to the fact that on this day World Teachers’ Day is celebrated, established by the International Labor Organization and UNESCO.
The holiday is intended to commemorate the signing of the “Recommendation on the Status of Teachers”. However, since it was proclaimed only in 1994, when education workers in Poland had been celebrating October 14 for 22 years, a new date was reserved for academic teachers.
