Customers of the Biedronka chain report that, when shopping, they are increasingly faced with situations where they cannot buy food at promotional prices because unknown people have stolen their discount. already used. The “Moja Biedronka” card scam allows fraudsters to save up to hundreds of zlotys just when they visited the store.
The procedure is simple. To buy products at promotional prices, customers of Biedronka stores must use the chain’s loyalty card – “Moja Biedronka” – at the checkout. For people’s convenience, the network also assigns it to the phone number provided by the customer. As a result, a customer who forgets their card at home will activate an ad at checkout if they give their phone number to the cashier. This is a very convenient solution, but it opened the door for fraudsters.
When shopping, such people divide them into smaller receipts and each time they randomly give a different phone number to the cashier. They often use the phone numbers of their friends and family or business associates saved in their phone book. These people are ignorant of this. Therefore, the fraudster steals discounts and promotions specified by Biedronka on the loyalty card linked to a specific phone number. The cleverest promotion scammers can save hundreds of zlotys on one purchase this way.
“Grandma had tears in her eyes”
The financiers we speak to also admit that the practice of stealing discounts is becoming more common. – At the beginning, my friends and I tried to refuse such clients from making so many “small receipts”. However, this did not help, because these people are usually so careless that they made fun of us, telling us that we should mind “our own business”, and after then they went to the self-service checkout and checked out themselves. . They still had to continue to make sure that they did not remove any goods without being scanned, said one of the employees of Biedronka in Malopolska.
– We told the managers too, and maybe they were higher up. Eventually we got over it. We are not the police to find out if someone is cheating. Especially when he cheats not on the store itself, but on his friends by giving out their phone numbers without permission. Later, we will only feel stupid in front of these people. More than once, I served a grandmother who was almost in tears when she heard that she could not buy something cheaper because someone had already used her card. Such a person does not even fully understand what happened and accuses the series of deception – another financier shakes her head. In his opinion, people who steal advertising can save up to several thousand zlotys if they repeat this scam several times a month.
The headquarters of Jeronimo Martins Polska, which owned the chain of stores Biedronka, is also aware of the theft of promotions and discounts. However, in the response sent to our editorial office, the company says that this is “isolated”.
– Such situations (as described by Onet – ed.) are related to several million transactions that are carried out every day in our branches – says Marek Złakowski, director of customer relationship development and digitization in Biedronka series. As the director said, each Biedronka customer also has the option to block the identification of their Biedronka card through a phone number.
– You can do it at the checkout, in the application, on the Moja Biedronka website or on the Biedronka Customer Service hotline – added director Złakowski.
The scammer asks: Are there stickers collected on this card?
After the publication of the first text, our editorial office received many e-mails from readers from all over Poland. These people confirm that they also suffered the practices we described. Many of them suspect that their phone numbers were in databases that were once “leaked” by various Polish companies. Others openly admit that discounts and promotions are more likely to be stolen from them by family members or friends.
However, the most interesting email we received was from Miss Agnieszka. This guy is the manager of “Bieronka” in one of the big Polish cities.
“Theft of discounts happens often in our country and many customers complain about it. The head office knows about it, but it minimizes the problem,” the woman wrote. “What’s worse is that the fraudsters have become so vicious that they also ‘stealing… children. This is another thing for the one who said Onet.”
As the woman explains, the series “Bieronka” has been running an autumn campaign for several years in which customers receive stickers for their purchases and keep them on a special card. After collecting the appropriate number of stickers, you can pick up the mascot for free in the store. They used to be “freshies”, then “sweeties”. This year the mascot is “producciaki”.
“These stickers can be collected with every purchase or collection on the “My Biedronka” card and collected later in larger quantities. And this is also used by promotion thieves. After they to give a foreign phone number, they ask if there are stickers on the card. When they hear that, they want to give them to us. the slim toy of their dreams. There are no more stickers , parents are frustrated.
The woman advises customers to select stickers regularly after each purchase. Then there won’t be a situation where someone steals the “goods” their children have earned through family shopping.
