A British doctor pleaded guilty today to a brazen but failed plot to kill his mother’s partner by giving him a fake Covid-19 vaccine, forging medical documents and posing as a nurse to administer poison to his victim.
Thomas Cowan, 53, disguised himself as a nurse, even taking his mother’s blood pressure before administering poison to her partner Patrick O’Hara in Newcastle, northern England.
O’Hara survived, but the venom caused him to develop necrotizing fasciitis – a potentially fatal bacterial carnivore infection – after receiving the injection, prosecutors said.
Quan, a family doctor in Sunderland, today pleaded guilty to attempted murder shortly after his trial began last week at Newcastle Crown Court, according to court staff.
He had already pleaded guilty to a charge of administering a harmful substance.
“Sometimes reality surpasses imagination”
Prosecutor Peter Makepeace told jurors on the first day of the trial last Thursday: “Sometimes, sometimes maybe, reality beats fantasy.”
Makepeace said Quan was concerned about his mother’s will, which said her house would be inherited by O’Hara if she was still alive after her death.
“Mr. Kwan used his encyclopedic knowledge and research on poisons to execute his plan,” Makepeace said.
“This plan was to disguise himself as a visiting nurse, go to Mr O’Hara’s address, the house where he lived with the defendant’s mother, and inject him with a dangerous poison under the guise of giving him a booster dose for Covid”.
The 53-year-old doctor checked into a hotel using a false name, put fake plates on his car and disguised himself wearing a wig to carry out the scheme, the prosecutor added.
