Ukrainian military operation in Kursk marks 2 months; experts’ assessment of Ukraine’s achievements is different
Ukrainian soldiers claim that the Kursk offensive slowed the advance of Russian troops to Kharkiv. Also, the intensity of bombardment by guided aerial bombs decreased by about five times and the Russian attack was temporarily stopped. The intensity of activity of the occupying troops on the southern side of the front decreased.
Ukrainian military expert Mykola Malomuz said that the Ukrainian troops managed to “pull back” tens of thousands of enemy soldiers from the east and south.
“[Krievijas vadonis Vladimirs] Putin wanted to create a 100-kilometer buffer zone on Ukrainian territory. We were faster and created a zone like that. We hit the enemy where he least expected it. At this time, we withdrew a lot of the opponent’s resources – about 55 thousand [karavīru]. Everything that was planned to be sent to the east, we delayed it a lot,” said Malomuž.
During the operation, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed the bridges over the Seym River, which made it possible to cut off the main routes for the supply of projectiles and ammunition to the Russian army.
Experts do not assess Ukraine’s operations in the Kursk region with the same optimism, as Ukraine continues to lose small towns and cities in Donbass.
Passi Paironen, an analyst of the intelligence analysis team “Black Bird Group”, is sure that, despite the successful Ukrainian tactical offensive in the Kursk region, it has not paid off yet and maybe that it even contributed to losses in the Donetsk region.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi praised the actions of the Ukrainian troops, including the replenishment of the so-called “exchange fund” of new Russian soldiers who became are prisoners of war.
“Ukrainians have proven that they can “push” the war onto Russian territory. And with enough support from our partners, we can “push” Russia until they realize that the give them the biggest contributions to the exchange fund, [kas palīdzēs] for the return of Ukrainians from captivity. This is important,” Zelensky said.
“The Independent” reported that Ukrainian troops captured more than 2,000 Russian soldiers in the Kursk region. Among them were at least 250 conscripts.
About 100 settlements currently under the control of Ukrainian troops on Russian territory are administered by the Ukrainian military command. Residents receive food, hygiene products and medicines.
The Russian side is not responding to Ukraine’s requests to create an evacuation corridor for the safe evacuation of civilians to territory controlled by Russia.
