/ world today news/ “On April 10, 26 years ago, our party changed its name to the Bulgarian Socialist Party. I will never forget that time. I was the secretary of the main party organization then, and I remember the difficult discussions at an important and emotional moment for the party. I remember the burning of the Party House, the smashing of the National Assembly and all the ups and downs for the party during all these 26 years”.
This was written on Facebook by the chairman of the BSP, Mikhail Mikov. According to him, this period is only the latest part of the 125-year history of the party. “Throughout the years, the history of the political power to which we belong has been intertwined with the history of our Motherland. Our party has gone through periods of persecution and illegality, of uprisings and revolutionary changes, of participation in political life and exclusion from it, of crises and creative management. Without undue modesty, today we are proud of the years in which there were achievements in Bulgaria – social, economic, scientific, cultural, sports”, says the BSP leader.
Mikov is categorical that the party has always remained true to its essence – to be the left party of Bulgaria, the political force that unites people of the left idea and defends the interests of the majority. According to him, parties that were created for their own purposes and to be self-sufficient are irrelevant today and almost no one remembers. “The BSP is different because it draws its strength not from the consumption of power, but from ideas,” he added.
Mikov recalls that 26 years ago BSP changed its name, changed its organizational structure, adapted its ideas to the changed conditions in order to continue to protect the interests of the majority in a changing world that needs a modern socialist party. “Even if some admit it with reluctance, we are still the most democratic party today. The BSP established itself as a defender of democracy, the main driving force behind the adoption of the modern Bulgarian Constitution, which laid down the democratic, legal, social state. Even today, the BSP is a defender of democracy in our parliamentary republic, which, unfortunately, lives in the shadow of creeping authoritarianism, goes to bed and wakes up with the prime minister’s moods and whims”, the chairman of the left also wrote.
According to Mikov, the BSP is changing even today, and this change is taking place through a correction in the political course to the left, in order to be closer to the ideas and expectations of this majority, whose trust we want to restore. “This is also done through organizational changes that will allow us to function better as a living political organism. We have done it many times in the past, we will successfully do it now. I hope we will continue on this path after the 49th Congress!” concludes BSP leader Mihail Mikov.
