Benfica’s match goes wrong – Voetbal International

Benfica had hoped on Sunday evening to follow up last Wednesday’s excellent victory over Atlético Madrid, but returned from a trip to Madeira almost empty. The match against Nacional was cancelled.

Killjoy on the island: the fog. That is often a problem in Madeira, and so the match was kicked off despite the cloudy visibility. After ten minutes in which (as far as we know) no goals were scored, the referee decided to stop for a while: it really wasn’t possible. The situation had not improved after more than half an hour’s break, after which the match was cancelled.

The regulations of the Portuguese Football Association do not provide for what happens next. In principle, the match should have been played on Monday evening, provided the conditions were good, but due to the international break, many players, especially at Benfica, will fly out to their national teams on Monday. If that indeed proves not to be an option, the Portuguese association will have to consider a new playing date. In 2.5 weeks it will be Benfica – Feyenoord in the Champions League.
